Leverage, technique, patience. The ground art that lets smaller, smarter practitioners control bigger and stronger ones. White belts to black belts train in the same room, on the same curriculum, at every one of our three locations.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport built around ground fighting — position, control, and submission. Unlike most martial arts, it emphasizes leverage and technique over strength, which is exactly why it rewards patience and precision over athleticism.
Our classes give you structured, progressive instruction from day one: positional fundamentals, escapes, sweeps, submissions, and the live rolling that makes BJJ stick. You'll drill, you'll spar at your level, and you'll walk out tired in a way that feels earned.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces back to early 20th-century Japan, then the Gracie family in Brazil, who adapted the art around leverage and technique — letting a smaller, weaker person overcome a larger, stronger one. In the 1990s, the Gracies demonstrated its effectiveness in the earliest mixed martial arts competitions, and BJJ went global.
Today, BJJ is practiced worldwide — but the curriculum that actually works is the one that stays honest to those fundamentals. That's what we teach at Alavanca. Structured classes. Proper technique. Progression you can feel.
